What About Me
(Bob Hendren)
What about Me? I hate buzzwords and stereotype slogans, but I couldn’t let this one go. Most of us have so much, but it seems the more we have the more we want. I can justify almost anything I want as something I need. How does that stack up to the reality that millions struggle to survive?
I knew a man, his name was Dan
Lived the American dream
He had good health and fabulous wealth
The most beautiful house I’ve ever seen
People said he was a good man
They wanted to be like him
A self-made man with a well-conceived plan
Connected to all the right friends
But once in a while, under that smile he was thinking
How could so many be hungry with no place to live
With all of his wealth, he wondered to himself
If he shouldn’t let go and give
But he sat down and turned on the TV and said “but what about me?”
Another man whose name was Stan
He walked away from it all
While everyone shouted
He never doubted
That he had heard God’s call
People said he was crazy
That he would be sorry some day
When he got old he’d be out in the cold
Even though he’d been told in so many ways
But he knew in his heart
He needed to start on his journey
He didn’t know where he would go, but he prayed
God take my life and that of my wife’s
Take us where you want us to be
Don’t let me go back to thinking
What about me
What about me, why should I believe I’m here to do more than to receive
The things that God has given me so freely
What about me, is it a sin to ask if in the end will I win or will I lose
What about me, how can I see what is real and what is fantasy
And which one of these roads I should follow
When this life comes to an end, what about me
What about me
It’s easy to see the right road for me
I want to be like Stan
Find God’s plan ignore the trappings of man
He is all that will stand in the end
But it’s one thing to know the answer
It’s another to pass the test
I find it harder to run the race
Than to make sure that I get enough rest
So starting today I’m going to pray for endurance
Don’t just show me the way, help me stay in the race
When I get weak, don’t let my feet
Veer off towards something I see
Cause as soon as I stop looking at You I ask What about me
Oh what about me
Will I live for today or store my treasures away
What about me
Will the things that I do reflect the glory of You
What about me
What about me
